About BMI: BMI is a simple screening measure based on height and weight — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, or body composition, so athletes and very muscular people are often misclassified. Categories shown follow WHO standard adult ranges (Underweight <18.5, Normal 18.5–24.9, Overweight 25–29.9, Obese 30+). This is not a diagnosis — talk to a doctor or registered dietitian for a full picture of your health.

How this calculator works

Body Mass Index is calculated with one simple formula: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters, squared. This tool does that math instantly in whichever unit system you're comfortable with — metric or imperial — and places your result on the WHO's standard adult BMI scale: Underweight (under 18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), and Obese (30 and above).

Beyond the raw number, it also shows your healthy weight range for your specific height, and how much weight you'd need to gain or lose to land at the top of the "Normal" range — useful as a general target, though not a prescription for how quickly or how you should get there.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI a perfect measure of health?
No — and this is worth taking seriously. BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes and very muscular people are often classified as "overweight" despite having low body fat. It also doesn't account for bone density, age, or where fat is distributed on the body, which matters for health risk.

Why does the tool ask for imperial units too?
Height and weight are measured differently around the world — feet/inches and pounds in the US, centimeters and kilograms almost everywhere else. The toggle lets you use whichever feels natural without doing your own conversion first.

What should I do if my BMI is outside the "Normal" range?
Treat it as a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis. A doctor or registered dietitian can look at the fuller picture — body composition, family history, activity level — and give you guidance that's actually personalized.

Does this work for children?
No. BMI for children and teens is calculated and interpreted differently (using age- and sex-specific percentiles), so this adult-focused calculator isn't appropriate for anyone under 18 — a pediatrician uses a different chart entirely.

Is my data stored anywhere?
No. Every calculation happens locally in your browser — nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.
